Phyllostachys aurea
Fairly slow growing and clump-forming. Bright green canes turning
to gold in full sun and remarkable for the swelling beneath each
node, most obvious at the base of the culm, where the nodes are
densely clustered. 12 feet. £17.50
Ph. aurea holochrysa
Culms a rich buttery yellow. Erect habit. One of the best yellow
bamboos. 12 feet. £27.00
Ph. aurea Koi
Culms a strong yellow with a green stripe. Erect habit and strong growth. Good for the smaller garden. 12 feet or so. £27.00
All forms of aurea have a well behaved growing habit.
Phyllostachys aureosulcata The
culms have yellow grooves and arch slightly when mature. Some
culms kink randomly at about 45 degrees before returning to the
vertical. The only bamboo that does this. Extremely hardy and
strikingly vertical. 15 feet. £17.50
Ph. aureosulcata spectabilis
This is a form of aureosulcata. It is a stronger growing plant
with dramatic yellow canes and a green stripe. The young canes
are often pink to raspberry. It needs more space than its parent.
An exceptional plant. Good winter colour. To 15 ft. Spectabilis
is the bamboo shown on the home page. £17.50
Ph. aureosulcata aureocaulis
Bright yellow canes. Strong growth which does well in sun or
shade. Perhaps not quite as vigorous or tall as spectabilis. £17.50
Phyllostachys bambusoides castillonis
Castillonis has bright yellow culms and a green groove. A rare
and extremely handsome plant. The leaves are light green, quite
large with the occasional flash of white in them. Slow growing
initially but striking. Height to 15 ft. £21.00
There are a number of varieties of nigra. Only
one of them is completely black. Henonis is a form that is
completely green. Nigra is a garden form of this green bamboo. It
was brought to Britain in the early C19 but like all bamboos went
out of fashion for fifty or more years.

Canes are splotched black and brown. Makes a good grove plant.

Phyllostachys nigra The
black bamboo. New shoots are bright green, then mottled and
usually black by the end of the season. The canes contrast
strikingly with bright leaves. Unrivalled plant. To 15 ft. £21
Phyllostachys nigra Henonis
Green canes even though it is called nigra. One of the taller
varieties when established. A very handsome green bamboo. Good
screen plant. £17.50
Phyllostachys edulis
Eventually one of the largest growing bamboos with the thickest
canes. It takes time to establish. Major source of edible bamboo
shoots. It is fairly rare. £21
Phyllostachys violescens The
canes can be violet, purple and green but these colours are only
really apparent on mature plants. Fat culms with small leaves.
This is a famous runner but worth it if you have space. £21.00
Phyllostachys viridi-glaucescens
One of the best all round large bamboos. Green with a blue gloss
to the back of the leaf. Vigorous and very tough. It is excellent
for groves and screens. A fast grower, it withstands a fair
degree of drought and is really hardy. £9.50
Phyllostachys vivax Tall,
powerful growth so it needs space. An exceptional plant if you
have the room. Fairly vertical from a young age. Fat canes when
youngish. £21
Phyllostachys
vivax aureocaulis. Like the parent but this plant is
creamy yellow all over. Greatly admired. £27.50
Pseudosasa japonica Extremely
hardy and tough. Leaves are large, glossy on top and matt below.
Excellent screen when established. A great favourite with the
Victorians as an evergreen, border shrub. To 12 feet. £9.00
Pseudosasa japonica variegata
As above but with creamy variegation. Good specimen plant.

Chimanobambusa quadrangularis Squared
culms with large nodes. New shoots are widely spaced. Growth
exceptional in sheltered districts. Large leaves to 9 inches,
dark green. £17.50
Chusquea culeou This South
American bamboo has solid olive green canes turning to dull
yellow. Its many branches and small leaves give the plant a
bottle brush appearance. Does well in dryish conditions. Very
hardy. Much sought after. £21.00
Himalayacalamus falconeri
Culms narrow and densely clustered turning olive green to straw.
Very well behaved. A fine, ethereal plant with small, narrow
leaves One of the nicest mountain bamboos. These plants have thin
canes, fine, little leaves and are totally different in
appearance to the phyllostachys. At maturity they form fountains
of green. £12.50
Semiarundinaria fastuosa Culms
thick and straight, green turning purple in sun. The leaves are
quite large. You can plant this bamboo in a mixed border. It's
well behaved. At the same time it sends up stunningly tall and
straight canes.£17.50
Hibanobambusa
tranquillans shiroshima A hybrid, rare in bamboos. Culms
are narrow bearing large, long striped leaves. The new leaves are
a creamy yellow. In spring this is a dramatic plant. Culms to 5
ft. Leaves 12 inches. £17.50
Chimonobambusa marmorea variegata
Slender culms mottled green, white and pink when new. Semi-dwarf
habit with tufted appearance. Small leaves with white stripe. To
4 ft. or so. Very hardy. £7.50
Thamnocalamus crassinodus `Kew Beauty' Delicate, narrow leaf. Canes often red and
densely clustered. Well behaved. Likes shade even tolerates
intense shade. New canes white bloomed turning steely, slatey
blue. Exceptional plant. Always in great demand. £27.50

Fargesia murielae Like all
the fargesias it is clumpforming and can fit happily into a small
garden. Very similar to nitida but with yellow, stouter canes. £7.50
Fargesia murielae Bimbo This is the smallest variety of murielae and grows to about 3ft or so. It is ideal for the front of borders and a good container plant.

Fargesia nitida Nymphenburg Culms are narrow,
purple with pronounced white bloom. Grows in a tight cluster. New
culms leafless, leaves appear in second year. Delicate floating
leaves. Good in shade or semi-shade - does well facing north. 12

Pleioblastus auricomus
Semi-dwarf. Large leaves which are bright yellow striped with
green. The sunnier the position, the brighter the leaf. Excellent
container plant. To 3 ft. Used to be called viridistriatus. £4.50

semi-dwarf with similar habits to auricomus. Leaves deep green
with white stripes. To 3 ft. Does well in shade Excellent in

Pleioblastus chino elegantissimus
Semi-dwarf. Culms slender. Small, white striped leaves. Extremely
elegant. £6.00
Pleioblastus pygmaeus True
dwarf bamboo, 10 inches or so and often used as an accent plant
in bonsai. Tiny leaves form dense carpets. Hardy. Container
friendly. £4.50
Pl. pygmaeus distichus Taller
variety. Thin crowded culms bearing masses of butterfly-like
leaves. £4.50
Indocalamus tesselatus
Enormous leaves on slender culms. Forms a mound. Exotic, tropical
appearance. To 3 ft. usually. Leaves up to 24 inches long by 4
wide. Very hardy though leaf margins may wither in winter. £7.50
Sasaella glabra albostriata
Variegated strong growing semi-dwarf, to 2ft. Dark green, white
flash. Good ground cover. £6.00
Shibataea kumasaca A really
attractive small bamboo. It has curiously textured, fattish
leaves, often light green. It needs lots of water to look good,
and some pruning down to a mound shape. Does well in pots in
shade. £6.00
Prices are for plants in 3 to 5 litre pots.
Plants noted as dwarf or semi-dwarf may be in 1 litre containers.
Larger plants are usually available, but not for every species.
All plants are subject to availability at the time of order. Some
plants sell out very early in the season.

Mail order The minimum
charge is £8.00. At present two plants can usually be sent for
£13.00 in one container on 48 hour delivery. Larger plants need
to be road delivered. Price on application. Plants may be cut
back to fit containers. This will not damage the plants.
